Feature - Add file encryption to the files
Add file encryption to the files stored in the dataDir folder so that a special hash would be used to encrypt/decrypt the files inside OpenDocMan. This would make the files un-readable by other users of the server where the files reside. There could be issues where the files would be encrypted and then the key lost, therefore losing the files. Would need to figure out a good way of handing this.

Allow quick e-mail sharing of document
After finding a document, allow quick sharing (via e-mail), with the document's direct download path included in the e-mails body.

Use DB layer to support more databases
More and more people are using PostgreSql instead of MySql. So it would be nice to support more than one database backend.
Also from an developer standpoint it would be nice to design a system which is more flexible and isn't necessarily tied to one piece of software

Allow document versions independent of revision
Allow a document version number to be provided at time of upload, and to be displayed on the home page.
Versions can take different formats (different to the revision number, which simply indexes the number of check-ins). Eg, version 0.1, 0.2, 1.1, 1.2 etc.
One major advantage of a DMS is to keep track of whether the current version you have (eg printed hardcopy) is the latest version. It would be good to be able to simply check the version printed on the title page of the document vs that listed on the home page of the DMS. Thanks.14 votes -
Add a project field that can be added on the fly when a file is uploaded and can be used to group the files for a specific project together
We create a group of files for each of the projects we produce. While they are distinct from each other (and from all the other files) they belong together. It would be nice to have a field that could be used to add a - or choose an existing - "group" or "project" as a file is being uploaded to help keep them together. This field should also be searchable.

Maintain Documents versions along with revision history, to allow checking old documents before they were revised
Some documents are sent out to customers and may be used as a template, for example lets say i have some manuals / brochures/ technical specification sheets / drawings, which have already been sent to some customers or used for references, now if they are checked out and checked in with a revision ( say even a spelling correction), the old version of document may be required in future would be lost to new revision, it should be preferably optional, where you can select such document version to be maintained or not.

The admin can add users with a standard password, at first login will be mandatory to change it.

Allow files to be stored on LAN server
Instead of hosting the files on the internet, an organisation should be able to utilise their own server in storing their files.

Feature - Store files with true filename
Store files with their true file name. In case of clashes, add postfix. Make sure this feature is worked on at the same time as the "file renaming" feature.

URL (web-link) to any document
Many systems use a URL (weblink) to a given document so that work instructions, drawings, etc are readily available to users who may not have email or ODM user credentials.
Could a file permission be added either as a default or by file to allow read only access to individual files without a login (if you know the link).
I suppose I could have a link directly to a file if I put them in the public http folder but as the documentation says this is not as secure. However then I'd be the only one able to tell others…

The ability to assign multiple categories to the same document. This would add flexibility to document management.

Document Change Request
Users see problems with documents but there is no way to easily tell the owner about the problem. The DCS should embody continuous improvement.
A related problem in a new DCS is that there is a need for a document but now way to create the demand and route it to a user.
